Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid with exfoliating properties. This 7% toning solution gently exfoliates for a radiant complexion and clear skin. With regular use, this formula also improves skin texture. It contains a Tasmanian peppercorn derivative, which has been studied for its ability to reduce irritation associated with acid use. The color of this plant-derived derivative varies seasonally, and this variation may be reflected in the product from time to time. This formula is also enhanced with ginseng root and aloe vera to brighten skin tone and soothe skin. The pH of this formula is approximately 3.6. Glycolic acid has a pKa of 3.6. The pKa is the most important aspect to consider in this type of formulation, as this value indicates the availability of the acid. When the pKa is close to the pH, an ideal balance between salinity and acidity is achieved, maximizing the effectiveness of acidic actives while reducing irritation. In such a case, increasing the pH would lead to an increase in salinity, which would actually make the formula even more irritating than if it were acidic.
